USB 3.0 Display Port issues with Windows 11

I have a USB 3.0 Display port dual monitor installed in Lenovo IdeaCentre 071AB7 running Windows 11 that keeps locking up the usb devices on the machine. In particular I have found that when is locked I can access the machine using a remote desktop but none of the local USB devices work in this condition. Checking the device manager the Display Port Driver shows an error code 10.

I am running the latest version of the USB 3.0 Display Port drivers version 11.6.7168 Dec 19 2024. I updated to this driver last Friday and the condition started to occur after the update.

This is worst than the behavior I was experiencing with the windows default driver where the display port would go off, even though I had it configured to not power down when idle; and could only be activated back by doing CTL-ATl-Delete.

I am about to downgrade the driver because the previous annoying behavior is way better than the current situation plus my this is my wife box and she is not a savy/friendly user.

Thanks,
Maizo

Hello @maizo and thank you for your interest in our Community.

From what I can see, it seems like the entire USB controller is experiencing issues. In order to confirm (or deny) this, the best is to test your DisplayLink device on a different computer. This will help isolate the source of the issue.

We look forward to hearing back from you!

Emmanuel,
Thanks for the response but unfortunately I don’t have another machine I can test the DisplayLink device with effectively. I was looking to downgrade the driver to an earlier version but couldn’t find older drivers in your site. Is there a chance I could get older drivers downloaded?

Also I removed the existing drivers by uninstalling the DisplayLink video adapter. However, after rebooting the system, Windows 11 re-installed the same drivers I already had, instead of the default windows drivers; these drivers had issues but did not lock the usb controller like the latest version drivers do.

TIA

Hello @maizo ,

While I don’t have the specific product ID for your device, our driver downloadable ZIP files will typically include a folder named “Older drivers”.

However, when drivers are released on our web site, they have been thoroughly tested at Synaptics first, then re-tested on our end with our particular products before updating the ones on our web site. Furthermore, drivers will typically affect our device alone and not lock your entire computer’s USB controller. This seems more likely to be an issue with the USB controller’s drivers. Therefore, I recommend ensuring that you have the latest BIOS firmware, Windows version, and USB controller drivers, in addition to our drivers, to ensure optimal compatibility.

As for testing on another computer, it may not be in terms of a solution, but even just for a short period of time: this test would be important in helping confirm if the issue is specific to the USB device or the computer.

If the problem persists, please contact our Technical Support team. They can assist you in troubleshooting the device to find a solution.

I hope this helps!

Hello Emmanuel,
First of all thanks for the responses, it is very much appreciated. As you suggested I checked the zip file I downloaded from your site for the old drivers but there were no old drivers in the archive.

However, I think I may have found the culprit for the lock down and although it doesn’t make a lot of sense right now the tests continue to show promise.

I didn’t mentioned in the post that the monitors I am using for this computer have both DP and VGA connectors. The PC I am using has an integrated VGA display driver that I cannot disable in the BIOS. This integrated display driver generates a 3rd display screen which is not visible to the user. The day I upgraded the driver I also connected the VGA adapter to one of the monitors as a backup. I believe it is this connection that is causing the lockdown shown as Error Code 10 in the device manager for the Display Link adapter. It doesn’t make sense to me that a VGA connection causes the USB controller to lock down, maybe there is a memory conflict of sort.

For the last 2 days I have been running the system without the VGA cable and so far the system has not locked down. It used to lock down in less than 30 minutes before. I also think that the need to use CTL-ALT-DEL is an incompatibility between the DisplayLink driver and a 3rd party screen saver called DreamAquarium. The reason I believe this is the case is because when the DP screens are dark, looking into the 3rd hidden display I always find a dialog box with an error for the screen saver. However, when I trigger the screen saver manually everything works correctly so there is another puzzle.

The condition above although not optimal leaves the machine in a usable state so I can teach my wife to deal with it for now.

TIA
Maizo
