When are Clamshell and Rotation supported with DisplayLink on macOS?

Support for clamshell mode (use of an external display with laptop lid closed) and external display rotation (portrait orientation of external display) varies by Apple laptop model and version of macOS installed.

Clamshell mode

  • Apple M1-based laptops with external power connected (e.g. Apple charger or dock with Power Delivery) - clamshell mode is supported starting with macOS Big Sur (11.1 and up).
  • Intel-based Apple laptops - clamshell mode is supported starting with macOS Monterey (12).

External Display Rotation

  • Apple M1-based laptops - external screen rotation is supported starting with macOS Monterey (12) and DisplayLink Manager 1.6 Beta and up.
  • Intel-based Apple laptops - external screen rotation is supported starting with macOS Big Sur (11.0 and up).
