Does the company have any products of this type?
I have been advised that I should connect my Samsung soundbar’s USB socket to my Samsung TV’s HDMI socket using one of these. I assume that this function requires a bi-directional link.
Hello @RoyFC, I do wish to apologize, but this is not possible. You cannot connect an HDMI video feed into a normal USB data port.
If you’re able to provide details of your setup (TV make/model, soundbar make/model, make/model of other devices connected to the TV or so soundbar, and what’s connected to what port where), we may be able to see if there’s some alternative solution.
Hi Justin,
I have tried to attach images of the TV and soundbar model information, plus the connection panel on the TV but cannot. The soundbar has sockets only for optical and USB connections.
You may also supply their model numbers in text format, and I can look things up. Pictures aren’t totally necessary, though they are helpful.
Right now, my current assumption is that you will need to connect the soundbar to the TV via an optical connection as that is standard, but I’d need exact models to be certain.
The TV is Samsung model PN50B530., model code PN50B530S2FXZC.
It has 3 HDMI sockets, 2 of which are in use; 2 sets component video sockets not used, a pair of audio out sockets not used, a pair of DVI audio socket not used, and one socket marked “Service”, which looks similar to a USB socket. Plus the optical audio in use.
THe soundbar model is HW-C400, model code HW-C400/ZC.

Justin,
In reply to your first comment I should have clarified. I have the TV and soundbar connected by the optical cable at present, but I cannot set up the soundbar to be controlled by the TV remote. Samsung support have stated that the soundbar USB/TV HDMI link is needed for that.
Roy
Hi Roy,
From what I can see in the manual, the USB port for the Samsung HW-C400 is for media playback from a USB device like a flash drive (source):
Additionally, pages 22 & 23 confirm the USB port is for a storage device not any sort of control and so I don’t believe that is correct.
The USB on the TV marked for service is just that. It’s for service, so doing things like potentially updating the firmware of the TV, or for technicians to diagnose issues.
From what I can see, page 16 would indicate the only change that needs to be made, is setting the TV to use an external speaker, and then it should work provided the TV supports this. This is going to be because the TV itself, is now outputting all of its audio only to the soundbar/receiver.
Now, with all that said, I have spotted the issue. Using an external remote with the soundbar requires setting the TV to an external speaker, however, your TV, disables the volume buttons when set to External Speaker, as per page 27 of the manual (source).
As such, it’s not possible to use the TV remote to control the soundbar. You would require a different soundbar or a different TV.
Hi Justin,
I am not surprised that this is your conclusion, although I hoped there might be a different one.
Thanks for taking the time to check into this.
Roy
It’s not a problem, Roy. I was hoping there might be some way to make it work. Given that your sound bar needs the TV set to use External Speakers for the TV remote to control it, and your TV specifically disables its volume controls when set up this way (expecting you to use the soundbar remote) there was just no workaround, regardless of products we may be able to offer. Both devices have conflicting setup requirements.
