How to Customize Monitor EDID and USB Name on StarTech KVM via SSH or Other Methods?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for assistance with customizing the EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) for monitors and renaming USB device names on a StarTech Portable Laptop Crash Cart Adapter . I would appreciate any guidance on whether this can be done via SSH or through some other approach.

I am using a start tech KVM Console to USB 2.0 Portable Laptop Crash Cart Adapter.

My Questions:

Monitor Name and Resolution Customization:
Right now, this device shows up as “KVM Adapter” in the display of the target device. Can this be customized for better compatibility with old servers and their BIOSes.
Can I change the name of the monitor that the Crash Cart Adapter emulates?

USB Device Naming:
Can I also tweak the names of the USB Keyboard and Mouse devices that gets emulated and presented to the target device?

I appreciate any guidance or tips.

Thanks in advance!

Hello @Ricky,

Thank you for posting on the Startech.com Community!

I would be happy to look into this for you to see if it is possible to customize these settings.

As we have a few different crash cart adapters, I just want to make sure I refer to the correct unit that you have. Can you confirm which of the following crash cart adapters you have:

Can I also please confirm the operating system the host computer would be running, as well as the make and model of the host computer if possible?

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Hello @LukasT ,

Thank you for your prompt response!

I am currently using both the NOTECONS01 and NOTESCONS02 crash cart adapters.

Regarding the host device, I will be utilizing the adapters across multiple systems running various operating systems, including:

  • Windows (latest version)
  • macOS (latest version)
  • Linux (Endeavour OS).

If you require any additional details about the host systems, feel free to let me know! I appreciate your assistance in helping me customize the settings.

Looking forward to your response.

Thank you,
Ricky.
