How to set up 3 port 1394 PCI card with windows 11?

Hello @martyblues66 and thank you for your interest in our Community.

To set up a 3-port 1394/FireWire card in Windows 11, first install the card into the matching slot type: PCI for PCI1394B_3, or PCI Express for PEX1394B3. After booting into Windows, open Device Manager and check under IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers to see whether Windows detected the card.

If the card is detected but the connected FireWire device is not working correctly, you may need to install/select the Microsoft 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy) driver. Here is the legacy installation guide. It is for Windows 10, but should apply the same to Windows 11.

The basic steps are:

  1. Download and run the Microsoft FireWire 1394 Legacy Driver installer.
  2. Go to:
C:\Program Files (x86)\1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)\X64_driver\
  3. Right-click Legacy1394.inf and choose Install.
  4. Open Device Manager.
  5. Expand IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers.
  6. Right-click the 1394 OHCI host controller and choose Update driver.
  7. Choose Browse my computerLet me pick from a list.
  8. Select 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy) and finish the installation.

If you’re using a bus-powered FireWire device, make sure the card’s internal power connector is connected where applicable, or use external power for the FireWire device as applicable. Also confirm you’re using the correct FireWire cable, such as 9-pin to 6-pin or 9-pin to 4-pin depending on the device.
