USB3SSATAIDE problems on new system (worked on old one)

Title says it. I’m moving data from one system to another. The source system cheerfully copied over 50GB of data to a Samsung 870EVO 1TB SSD drive using my USB3SSATAIDE adapter. However, the target system throws all kinds of low level syslog errors about “…bad reply length” before hanging or deactivating the drive. Moved it back to the original system and it’s all fine again.

The target is a System76 Thelio-Mira system with ASrock motherboard. It’s USB support has not otherwise been any problem at all. Advice on how to manage this would be appreciated!

Hello @vtgearhead,

Thank you for asking your question here on the StarTech.com Community.

It is strange to hear about the USB3SSATAIDE is working correctly on one system but experiencing errors on a new system.

My first instinct here might be to try isolate to the hardware. I would like to assume the USB3SSATAIDE itself is working ok, but here are some ideas:

  1. If am reviewing the correct information it looks like this System76 may have multiple USB ports in groups. You could try different USB ports, particularly from a different grouping, to see if the error continues after those changes.
  2. If available, try another SSD or hard drive on the USB3SSATAIDE.
  3. Another USB adapter to test with the Samsung SSD or simply another USB storage device.
  4. Connecting the USB3SSATAIDE through a hub, dock, or other intermediate USB device, or connect it directly to the computer, if it is currently being tested with another USB device.

If none of those options are possible, or help isolate the issue, we can gather a few more details.

Can you share more about the two systems you are working with?

  • The full model information for each computer
  • Operating systems and versions on each computer
  • More error output, including where those errors appear.

Let me know if you have any other questions too, I will be happy to look into this further with you.

Sincerely,
@DavidF

Hi, David. I have been able to duplicate the problem with two other drives; one WD SATA mechanical drive and a second Samsung SSD. It really looks like an incompatibility between the USB3SSATAIDE and the new system. I have tried moving from the chassis-top USB port to another on the rear. No change.

The ‘working’ system is a Linux machine running Ubuntu 18.04 (yes, older, which is why I’m moving to another box). It is based on an ASUS Z87 motherboard. 32 GB of memory. i7 4.2GHz CPU.

The problem system is running Ubuntu 24.04. It uses an Asrock X870 Pro RS motherboard. 96 GB of memory. AMD Ryzen 9 9900X (24-core).

Here is an extract from /var/log/syslog that shows the low-level issues:

Hello @vtgearhead,

Thank you for getting back to me with the tests and the log output.

I would not normally expect an incompatibility with a USB based SATA adapter, but after a few searches, it looks like there are some chipsets that might have this issue, though I did not see the chipset used in the USB3SSATAIDE referenced.

Based on this output I have a couple of things to check.

  1. What partition style is used on the drive? You may need to check this on the first system. If NTFS is used you may need to install additional tools (ntfs-3g, fuse)
  2. Can you try mounting the drive manually? (sudo mount -t …)

I am curious if this yield some more clues or if we are still suspecting some sort of compatibility/interoperability issue.

Sincerely,
@DavidF

The drive uses traditional MBR with a single primary partition that uses the entire drive. The filesystem is Linux ext4 with journal. But, keep in mind that the internal secondary SSD drive (also a Samsung 870 EVO) is partitioned exactly the same way with the same filesystem and never causes any issues.

I’ve tried to mount the drive manually, but the operation hangs hard in kernel I/O, at which point it cannot be killed. It becomes so stuck that a software reboot attempt also hangs, requiring a machine hardware reset to recover.

The log verbiage about unexpected status response would seem to indicate something fairly low-level is amiss.

Let me know if you need any further information?

UPDATE: I wonder if this touches on the underlying issue:

?

Ubuntu 24.04 uses systemd 255 and the change went into v257. Not practical to upgrade just one package and likely to break a lot of things if I try.

Hello @vtgearhead,

Thank you for checking this things too. The partition type. format and other mounting options were worth checking before we consider some sort of bug or failure issue.

That github link regarding the udisks issue link looks like a good find! It may be worth checking if that update will be added to your Ubuntu installation in the future.

I am sorry about this trouble.

Perhaps the USB3SSATAIDE could be affected because of the nature of the dual IDE/SATA capabilities?

I might suggest testing with USB based adapter that has a single function like the USB3S2SAT3CB which will be compatible with 2.5" SATA drives.

USB3S2SAT3CB - https://www.startech.com/en-us/hdd/usb3s2sat3cb

Please let us know if you find any more details or if you find better results with another adapter.

Sincerely,

@DavidF

I think the USB3SSATAIDE has a fatal incompatibility, but I’m not expert enough to diagnose it at a low level.

Your comment about the single-function adapter was interesting. It turns out I have a Radio-Shack branded SATA to USB adapter that looks exactly like the Startech product - to the point where it may well be the same unit with OEM labeling. When I use the RS adapter everything works fine with the new system. I just copied 90+ GB of data to the external drive and saw no problems at all!

So, the immediate problem has been solved and I now have a path to migrate files. I’ll just have to remember that the USB3SSATAIDE is incompatible with the System76 machine.

Hello @vtgearhead,

Thank you for trying that other USB to SATA adapter.

I might suggest testing the USB3SSATAIDE on this system after some standard updates. If you haven’t already tried an indirect connection though a hub, or a dock, sometimes this can help with these sort of compatibilities, especially if it is timing related.

For now, I am glad to hear you were able able to find a way forward for your data transfer needs.

You are welcome to post here on the StarTech.com Community or contact us directly for support if you need any help in the future, we are happy to help!

Sincerely,

@DavidF
