Display disappears after 3 seconds after changing computers

Hi. I have a SV431USB KVM switch and every time I switch between computers, the display stays for 3 seconds, then the screen goes black and I can’t do anything. I’m able to move my mouse and use my keyboard before that happens, but nothing stops the screen from going black.

I was wondering if I might need a firmware update on my switch.

Hello @Delastek,

Thank you for posting on the Startech.com community! I am sorry to hear you are having issues with our SV431USB.

This KVM does not have any firmware updates. Also for products that do have firmware updates, we typically only recommend performing an update if you are experiencing an issue the firmware is designed to resolve.

To help determine our next steps, can I please ask:
-What are the make and models of computers connected to the KVM?
-What is the make and model of monitor connected to the KVM?
-Has this behavior always been present or has the KVM been working for a while and this issue is recent?

In the meantime, I would recommend performing the steps below as they can sometimes help resolve strange issues with KVMs:

  1. Shut down all computers and displays
  2. Unplug everything from the KVM (Video cables, Power and USB) and leave fully disconnected for a full 30 minutes for power to fully dissipate
  3. Plug in the DC power adapter to the KVM switch, it will default to port 1
  4. Connect the video cables for the console monitor(s)
  5. Power on the monitor(s) and wait 15 seconds
  6. Connect the keyboard and mouse to the designated keyboard and mouse ports
  7. Connect the Video and USB cables between the KVM and PC1
  8. Make sure PC1 is selected and power on the PC
  9. Repeat step 7 and 8 for the remaining PCs

I would also recommend testing the KVM with another VGA monitor, if you have one available, to see if it experiences the same behavior when switching computers.

If these steps do not help and you still require further assistance, I would recommend to reach out to our support team via phone or live chat: https://www.startech.com/en-us/support. Live interactions through phone or live chat allow us to better understand what is happening, allowing us to provide the best support and can often have a quicker turnaround to a resolution. We can then update this post with the solution once troubleshooting has been completed.
