KVM - SV231DPDDUA2 - Display does not engage after switch

Hi all,

I’m looking for some troubleshooting assistance with an issue being experienced.

Issue:
When pressing the KVM “Select” button to switch between a laptop and desktop, regularly the display for the laptop does not re-engage.

This results in having to unplug the USB-C to DP Adapter and or restart the laptop which is making the KVM unreliable.

There is usually an audio sound to indicate the KVM switching, however when the display doesn’t re-engage on the laptop, there is no sound.

Hardware:
KVM: StarTech SV231DPDDUA2 - 2-Port DisplayPort Dual-Monitor KVM Switch
USB-C to DP adapter: StarTech CDP2DP14B - USB-C to DisplayPort Adapter
Laptop: Dell Latitude 5500
Desktop: Dell OptiPlex 7000 Micro
Monitors: HP Z22i
USB-A to B Cable: Lindy USB 2.0 3M

Configuration:
Laptop
Display: Connected to KVM via USB-C to DisplayPort adapter and then DisplayPort cable (one cable - single screen)
USB: Type-A to Type-B cable connected directly to KVM

Desktop:
Display: Connected directly to KVM with DisplayPort cable (two cables - dual screen)
USB: Type-A to Type-B cable connected directly to KVM

Monitors:
Display: Connected directly to KVM with DisplayPort cable (two cables - dual screen)

Troubleshooting:
Could anyone please advise what troubleshooting steps or any known issues that could assist in overcoming the issue?

Thank you!

Hello @Glory4Apps and thank you for your interest in our Community.

For this situation, I would recommend to verify two things:

  1. Please make sure that you are using the provided power adapter with the KVM. Although the KVM can function without the power supply, using USB bus power can lead to issues like this when switching between active and sleep state computers.

  2. If you are running a Windows on the laptop, I would recommend disabling USB selective suspend mode. Feel free to visit this Online FAQ for instructions.

Furthermore, if your laptop is generally connected to power, you may want to adjust the sleep timer to “never” when powered. This should allow your laptop to behave more like your desktop does, at least when connected to power.

I hope this helps! Let us know if you require any further assistance.
