Latency in converting from HDMI->VGA & VGA->PAL

I have a scenario where I need to take an HDMI signal and convert to VGA and we are using HD2VGAE2.

Then I need to take the VGA output and convert it to PAL and we are using VGA2VID.

The setup allows me to successfully display video but I was wondering if you could point me to some notes that would highlight any latencies that would be introduced in each converter?

Hello @jdd,

Thank you for taking time to ask your question on the StarTech.com community page.

I am happy to hear the HD2VGAE2 and VGA2VID work well for you.

While I expect a very small amount of latency with video conversion technologies like these two products, it should not be noticeable for most standard applications. After some brief searching, we do not have any product information that highlights latency information. When I have searched more general information online, it seems some indicate these kinds of conversions may be lagless or at worst only a couple of frames per second.

If you wish, I will be happy to investigate this further. May I ask why you are looking for latency information? How many of each of these converters do you have? Do you anticipate purchasing more?

Please reply with any other questions. If you would like me to investigate more, please share any details you can. We can take some time it investigate further.

Sincerely,

@DavidF

Thanks @DavidF. I’m replacing an end analogue device with a digital one and there are a few timing differences. There could be something needing adjusted on the digital device but with the change in video transmission to just HDMI to SDI I wondered if there were delays being introduced by the analogue converters i.e. 2-3 frames.

I did look on the documentation too but I didn’t see anything either. If you find anything more specific it may help explain a few of the differences I’m seeing.

Hello @jdd,

Thank you for sharing some more about your devices and what is occurring.

I have reviewed our internal notes about the HD2VGAE2 and VGA2VID. The HD2VGAE2, and other similar converters, have no indication of latency in the notes available to me. However, I see the VGA2VID does have a note indicating a possible latency of about 2 frames.

Will you be able to account for the 2 frames in your configuration? I might also suggest testing a single product solution like the CPNTA2HDMI.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Sincerely,

@DavidF

Thanks for your help @DavidF. Having this level of detail is useful.
